F1: Russell wins Canada pole as Ferrari exits Q2 in shock double disappointment
Verstappen takes pole in damp Canadian conditions
Mercedes driver George Russell has taken pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix, while Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz shockingly failed to make it into the top 10 in qualifying.
Russell's redemption
Russell's pole is his first of the season and comes after a difficult start to the 2023 campaign. The young Briton has been outperformed by his teammate Lewis Hamilton in recent races, but he showed his pace in Canada.
Russell will start ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who took pole position in last year's race but was unable to convert it into a race win.
Ferrari's Q2 exit
Ferrari's double Q2 exit is a huge surprise, as the team has been one of the strongest performers in qualifying this season.
Sainz finished 11th, while Leclerc only managed 14th. The result means that Ferrari has not scored a point in qualifying for the first time since the 2020 Tuscan Grand Prix.
Mercedes' resurgence
Mercedes' performance in qualifying is a sign that the team is making progress. Russell's pole position is the team's first since the 2021 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, and it comes after Hamilton won the previous race in Baku.
The race will take place tomorrow at 2pm local time (7pm BST).
